“My dad designed the piece that inspired this story specifically for this anthology, and it was as much his title that gave me the plotline as the image itself. He called it ‘Ultra Jazz Demons’. When I look at this design, I find it terribly unsettling. Many of dad’s designs are symmetrical, or as near as they can be, but this is chaos. While I could have picked out its intricacies and interpreted different sections of the design to inspire different aspects of the tale, I preferred to embrace the overwhelming atmosphere of violence and disorder that it radiated. I imagined a surreal, hungry entity, drunk on its own desires, and urging those who stood before it to… what? That was the question I sought to answer, in a tale that (somewhat self-indulgently) features both myself and my father.”
